I think he hit the guy square in the face. The only thing that saved Cheney's "friend" is that Cheney shot him with a 28 gauge bird gun with birdshot. Probably didn't even break any bones. Just hamburgered up the guys's face.

The bore of the gun is just barely wider than 1/2".
