A very smart pol once told me that between the economy and the environment, the economy always wins. Maybe too cyncical but often true.

If the only tool you have is a hammer, problems tend to look like nails.

If you're in the government, all answers are -- more government. During times of prosperity they'll increase spending - and grow - because "we" can afford it. During times of decline, they'll spend because "we" need to be stimulated.

That's how life is. The US is a successful nation because of checks and balances and limited government. Alas, we're in danger of losing that advantage.
