It's just one of many factors, though a major one. The media got caught up in the celebrity status of Obama. Even now, the media admits being soft on him.

McCain himself was all over the place when it came to domestic issues. The overemphasis on Joe the Plumber showed just how lacking McCain's campaign strategy was.

But that doesn't excuse the media for leading off a story with the ad hominem attack. I don't mind the facts being reported, and I'm used to liberal bias in journalism, but the way it was presented crossed the line. You might as well replace all the journalists in the NYTimes and the AP with OMGLOLWTF bloggers.
