I think it is an argument for, but still a cost that many don't expect.

I have had good luck with bear funds. MZZ and SDP have done great, though both declined right after I bought them.

I never liked AG, though that was more personal than professional. My "buddies" at American Capital told him we would only buy "Townsend-Greenspan" reports if I agreed to pay for it out of my fund's commissions. He got a seat next to me on the way to New York and spent the entire flight trying to sell me. But I would not use the fundholders' commissions for any soft dollar products, and there were many I would have bought before I bought his, so it was pretty uncomfortable. This was around 1985-1986.
