Re: "Why anyone would think it was ok for a major financial house is beyond me."

Simple....

Because they DON'T really CARE about the 'long-term health of the financial house'.

It's all about the PERSONAL WEALTH that can be gleaned!

During a bull cycle the more leverage you pile on the higher the profits you can report!

THUS: execs. and traders can take home *massive* bonuses each year (far in excess of any almost nominal salary amounts...), and capture large gains from the exercise of option grants.

And... when the Bull cycle inevitably turns to the next Bear?

(And the companies fall onto the rocks, forces to restate prior years' reported phony 'earnings'?????????)

Well --- no one really CARES (except for the poor, duped stock holders) because there is no way to 'claw-back' all those massive paid-out bonuses!

The execs. can retire, or move to the South of France, confident in the knowledge that THEY GOT THEIRS!

The 'long-term health and viability of the company'???????

No one in the know really cares, it ALL ABOUT the short-term opportunities.
