Siemens-Mosel Vitelic DRAM venture
starts up Taiwan fab in just 11 months

HSINCHU, Taiwan--ProMOS Technologies Inc. here has begun ramping
up its 8-inch wafer fab, which is scheduled to be operating at full capacity
by year's end fabricating 64-Mbit DRAMs with 0.35-micron technology.

During an opening ceremony this week, officials said the company's initial
production schedule calls for 20,000 wafers to be processed a month by
ProMOS, which is a joint venture between Taiwan's Mosel Vitelic Inc.
and Munich-based Siemens AG's Semiconductors division.

The joint venture was formed 11 months ago. Mosel Vitelic and Siemens
said they plan to make a total capital investment of $1.7 billion in ProMOS
over the next three years. During 1998, ProMOS said it will convert its
wafer processing lines to Siemens' 0.25-micron technology for 64-Mbit
and 256-Mbit DRAMs.

"The ProMOS joint venture represents an important step in the company's
globalization strategy. Our excellent partnership with Mosel Vitelic helps to
strengthen our presence in Asia Pacific," said Ulrich Schumacher, president
and CEO of Siemens Semiconductors. "As part of our [worldwide] $6
billion investment, the new facility in Taiwan also makes Siemens
Semiconductors the only supplier to establish 64-Mbit wafer fabrication on
three continents -- Europe, Asia and North America."
