You bet they know. And for sure they know that eventually they will indeed make money on Prius or whatever the next generation will be named.

They might know but need to color their remarks for public consumption.

They are not making money on the Prius. But they are probably covering some subset of expenses that makes them able to claim they're making money.

For example, they are likely covering variable production costs so they can claim contribution margin from building them.
