Ted, I don't think sleep apnea IS an auto-immune disease. I think it's most commonly a bio-mechanical breathing problem related to snoring.

I don't want to have to defend Buteyko's theory but he would disagree with you. Basically, he believed that when your breathing gets screwed up and you begin to what he calls overbreathe, your body reacts in all kind of ways to reverse the process and get you to breathe less. He would consider Sleep Apnea one of those ways.

Here's more on the subject:

How this all developed was when he was a resident in Moscow. He would watch patients who were dying and noticed that their breathing became more elevated the closer they were to death. Eventually he was able to predict when they would die by the quality of their breathing. At the time, he also suffered from hypertension or high blood pressure. To test out his theory, he began to try breathing less. Over the course of a year during which he experimented with his breathing, he was able to eliminate his condition. Eventually, he founded a clinic that was devoted to his theories on breathing.
