If the country needs a military how is requiring the citizenry to serve in it (for a limited time unless there's an actual war going on)--all able bodied citizens--kind of like the Israeli Army does--enslave them?

That's the price we pay to be free and not be enslaved by others--which is far worse--IMHO. The Hawaiian Islands belong to us and not the Japanese because of this concept.

Didn't you get drafted yourself?

It's amazing how many "Freedom Loving" types here advocate enslaving our young folk for various reasons.

I think it depends on what party is in control of the Federal government as to whether the left wing supports the concept.
With the Democrats in control you can expect that two years of government service would include being a "community organizer".

Lindy, I've been thinking about this, and it seems to me that if everybody does it (serve), it's not slavery....it's just citizenship.

What was wrong in the last draft, IMO, was that everybody didn't have to go. That might not have been slavery, but it wasn't fair.

I think universal draft (with the majority serving in the military) would do wonders for this country, not the least of which would be to counteract provincialism (when I went in I discovered that there were Yankees and black folks who turned out to be pretty damn good). I also don't expect it to happen.

I enjoy your thread, Happy New Year!
