Throw the tax on the consumption of the gasoline and you ensure you hit the right people.

Tax the fuel, not the vehicle. If the Escalade is the most appropriate vehicle for people, they will gravitate towards Escalades. If the Honda Fit is most appropriate, people will gravitate towards it. Some will own vehicles in both classes.

I can't fit a load of lumber or my kayaks into a fuel efficient car. I also don't want to take a big lumbering tank of a truck out to dinner every day.

If I'm responsible and drive a Honda Civic why should I pay the same gas tax as someone driving an Escalade?

Because, as this thread pointed out a month or two ago, there are many cases where the Escalade is the more appropriate and responsible vehicle to drive.

The Escalade makes a much better 'grocery' car.

Wow, we are in rare agreement on cars <ggg>. Seriously, I love high performance machinery as much as the next guy, but most of the large SUV's are not as space/fuel efficient as a minivan. I have yet to meet an Escalade offroader <ggg>, so it's definitely a style thing. Perhaps a moot point, as Ford has ended production of the Excursion and Expedition, and GM has closed a couple of plants making large SUV's.

John
