I agree with much of what you say, but I believe most Jews support Israel, the country, but not necessarily the Govt. of Israel, any more than most American's support Bush or the actions of many in our Govt.

Unfortunately, Israels government is disfunctional. There average govt. lasts something like 1-1/2 years. They cobble together many factions to create a govt. and often they don't even speak with one another. In short they sorely need to rewrite their Constitution. This isn't my opinion, I really knew little about how the Govt. worked until I attended a lecture on it, it's largely the opinion of the lecturer who was quite an expert. I doubt that anyone leaving the room didn't think he was right.

I've attended a few lectures where ways to have peace in Israel were discussed. Invariably they all came to one conclusion, either U.S. or Multinational U.N. or other troops had to police the borders, to prevent weapons being imported, and a zone between Israeli and Palestinian occupied territories. There is no other simple solution, the Palestinian's teach the hatred of Israel in their schools, I don't know that it's also true of Israeli Schools, but when a country's continuously under attack, even if 99 of 100 missiles or rifle shots fall harmlessly, you can't prevent people from hating those firing at them.

I don't know that we'll ever dedicate the troops, but likewise, even if a Palastinian State is established, they get the Temple Mount, etc. etc. etc. there will not be peace. Peace can only come if at least respect, if not love, replaces hatred.

Personally I doubt that in my lifetime there will be true peace, I hope there is in my kids lifetime, and if not in my unborn grandkids lifetime. Of course our world has never seen true peace, but perhaps if we don't blow ourselves off the planet it will happen some day.

Gary

ok ok, I'm leaving....just a few final thoughts.

What good are they as an "ally"?

What good are you as a citizen?

They can't help us fight anywhere.

How much time did you spend in the U.S. military?

They cost us a fortune.

So did the tax-payer subsidized treatment for your Tijuana syph.

Our unfair and irrational support of them

I got bad news - even Barack supports them!

has us looking bad to our REAL alles

Are you referring to Saudi Arabia or Mexico?

I suppose you really do consider the Saudis our allies. This should qualify you to join Lizzie over in the penalty box.

ok ok, i'm really going.

What good are they as an "ally"? They can't help us fight anywhere - we have to beg them NOT to get involved, as in the Gulf War. They cost us a fortune. Our unfair and irrational support of them has us looking bad to our REAL allies and causes the Arabs that own all the oil to hate us.

Don't forget Israel costs us $6 billion nearly every year. The US is subsidizing their existence....thanks to Truman.
