So would you be happy if we matched what the Euro countries are doing? Or do we have to be absolutely the last country to start working towards alt energy?

No.. we should be the FIRST to research and develop SMART Alternative energy that is competitive, or more productive, than fossil fuels.

I'm ALL FOR alternative energy that is as competitive (or even closely competitive) with fossil fuels so that it provides us either a economically competitive edge, or negates international event risk. Additionally, I'm for whatever energy resource that minimizes our trade deficit and leaves that $700 Billion in imported oil dollars here in America.

But fossil fuel prices have to be at a certain price level to make alt energy attractive and not a burden upon our economic competitiveness.

Thus, I'm more inclined to see us develop algae based fossil fuels (they don't compete with the food supply), Natural gas vehicles (plenty of NG domestically available), nuclear (if only to create the electricity infrastructure for hydrogen production), and PHEV where fossil fuels and battery operated vehicles work in harmony. I'm also in favor of any other economically sound source of energy production, including thin-film solar that competes favorably with fossil generated electricity
