" I see no reason for these trucks, especially since a minivan as far as I can see in many cases has more room in it. "

I've got some very fresh anecdotes. I just traded my Nissan Pathfinder for a Ford Windstar. Both small trucks with V6's.

The Pathfinder was a pain in the butt of a truck. It only had three doors, and the main cargo door has a tire and a rack to hold it you have to swing out of the way before you can get access to the back. Despite being a small SUV, it got lousy mileage, 17/23. I think this is partially due to the extra weight of the 4wd system, which is hardly ever used.

The Windstar with the seats out has WAY more room and much easier access than the Pathfinder. It's FWD gets through this winter's heavy snow just fine, thanks. The suspension is much more comfortable than the Pathfinder's. It's mileage isn't great, 19/26, but it has the 3.8 liter, 200 hp engine. For a minivan, it hauls ass. Not one regret yet.
