Excuse me, how has Byrd expressed his alleged racism since, oh I dunno, 1970?

Well, there was the "white nigger" comment to Tony Snow in '01.

But in the 90s he told a group of young people who were interested in politics to be sure and avoid the kkk because you could get that "albatross" around your neck. Something like that -- indicating, of course, that his opposition to the KKK is merely form over substance.

It is not insignificant that he voted against Clarence Thomas (and Thurgood Marshall).

We'll never know whether his apology is real or merely politically expedient. But we do know that his hatred for blacks in the 40s, 50s, and 60s was just as real as that of George Wallace. I don't believe there is a Republican currently serving with such an egregious record.

It is typical, two-faced Democratic liberalism -- while you bashed Trent Lott for providing accolades for Thurmond, your entire party drools over Byrd who was AT LEAST as much a racist as Thurmond was. At least.
