I agree but we also dont know the final outcome yet. Not as good as i hoped but a lot less worse than i feared just a year or so ago. I give Gates a lot of credit.

Gates was crucial, but you have to keep in mind that he was hired with the precondition that he support the "surge". Essentially, he was told, "We're going with the surge. If you can support that direction, you're hired. If not, we'll need someone else."

While it is true we don't know the final outcome, it is difficult to envision it not being a hell of a lot better than what the Left would have dumped on us by pulling out two years ago. 20 years from now, who knows?

Bush prevented it from becoming what the Left had predicted all along -- a Vietnam-like quagmire that we ended up losing. It is now extremely unlikely anything remotely like that would happen, and Bush will be credited with it by history.
