We have a similar covered deck on our cabin. The supporting uprights for the awning are angle iron with wood 4 x 4s for the rail, and angle iron cross support. I requested an angle iron foot rail, and got it. The top rail is angle iron topped with 2 x 6 ironwood.

The angle iron rusts to a really nice color.
