TeraStor Selects Hitachi Microprocessor for Use in Near Field Recording Disk Drives; Price and Performance Key Factors in TeraStor's Decision to Use Hitachi's Microprocessor SAN JOSE, CALIF. (Oct. 9) BUSINESS WIRE -Oct. 9, 1997--TeraStor(TM) Corp. announced today it has selected Hitachi America's SH-7021 reduced instruction-set computer-type (RISC) microprocessor for use in its Near Field Recording(TM) disk drives. The TeraStor NFR drives are expected to become available in the first half of 1998. "TeraStor selected Hitachi's microprocessor because of its performance and affordable price. The built-in DSP functionality and Hitachi's quick responsiveness to our needs were also deciding factors," said Amyl Ahola, president and COO, TeraStor. "This announcement is further evidence of TeraStor's commitment to work with world class companies in the development of our NFR-based products." Hitachi's SH-7021 The SH-7021 microprocessor is considered to be one of the industry's price and performance leaders. Hitachi's SH-7021 is part of a new generation of RISC microprocessors that integrate RISC-type CPUs and the peripheral functions required for system configuration onto a single chip. The SH-7021 was designed for use in a number of products including disk drives, video games and automobiles. "Hitachi is excited that TeraStor has selected the SH-7021 to use in its Near Field Recording disk drives," said Steve Moore, system solutions marketing manager, mass storage, Hitachi America Ltd., Semiconductor & I.C. Division. "As a world leader, Hitachi is excited to see our products being used in this potential significant storage application." TeraStor's NFR disk drives will deliver a compelling price and performance benefit to the data storage market. NFR-based products will offer the capacity and performance required to meet the needs of high-end data center, workstation, or networked environments, but will be inexpensive enough for use on the desktop. The relationship with Hitachi is a continuing part of TeraStor's on-going strategy to work with world class companies that have proven expertise and can provide high-volume availability of key parts as TeraStor brings its products to market. To date, TeraStor has announced licensee agreements with Quantum Corp. (announced September 15, 1997) and Imation Corp. (announced March 10, 1997) and has also established strategic supplier agreements with Seagate Technology Inc. (announced May 19, 1997), Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. (announced August 18, 1997) and Silicon Systems (announced April 28, 1997). About TeraStor TeraStor Corp. designs, manufacturers and markets ultra-high capacity, high performance data storage products based on its proprietary Near Field Recording storage technologies. This technology provides a significant capacity advantage at a lower cost-per-gigabyte than all other existing storage technologies. TeraStor's Near Field Recording products set new mass storage benchmarks for the next decade. The first TeraStor Near Field Recording products will be available in 1998.
