what would happen if japan wrote off its US debt?

The same thing that would happen if it held it: stealth devaluation via inflation would erase its value.

I don't think Mikuni called for the writing off of all the debt.

It really makes no sense right now, unless they are
forced to write it off - err, US debt gets to be
worth zero due to US default. It's excellent value and very
liquid at this point. Treasuries are bubbling like there is
no tomorrow. -g- It only makes sense not to buy it and maybe
sell some into strength.
