For one... you are assuming a 'steady state pie'

I assumed no such thing. Our piece of the pie has been about 1/5th for a long time, if you measure by GDP. Most of the pieces have grown, but ours has grown also.

1/5th is rounding off, but its been something like 20 to 23% for a long time.

As for smaller nations banding together

1 - It means their are less pieces, not that ours is a smaller part of the pie.

2 - In economic terms, and in population, the US has been growing faster than Europe.

3 - In military terms the EU as such might be a bit more significant, because more military planning (and to a limited extent even operations) is done under the EU label, but that's just the label not the underlying reality. If you compare US military power to the military power of the countries in the EU, we've probably been gaining in relative terms even though the number of countries in the EU has been increasing (and if you consider the fixed set of the current countries or the previous countries, than we've clearly been gaining).

4 - The EU isn't an enemy. If we where fighting against the EU then its bigger size would be an important issue in terms of relative decline, but its biggest size doesn't counteract or weaken the US.

5 - The EU isn't a country, or much of a military alliance. Its a trade block. Should we add Canada and Mexico's wealth population and power to the US figures because of NAFTA?
