I do not believe that Schwab receives kickbacks. In fact, they badmouth the other firms that do. As a "regular" Schwab 500 customer, you are expected to do 4 trades per month but they are not strict. You may have some active months and some not so active months. Under my new negotiated commission, I am expected to do 10 trades per month. I have averaged about 30 per month since I started with Schwab so I am not concerned. Watch in a couple of months for Schwab's new lower rates. Are you a TEI memeber by any chance? I chair the IRS Administrative Affairs Committee in the Detroit Chapter.
