He was a damned good Senator but chose not to run again because the Republican party in Illinois gave him a hard time when he bucked them; he put the people first, not a party.

This is how Obama came to win the US Senate seat; there was no incumbent. And of course, he immediately began his campaign for President.

You can thank the Republican Party in Illinois for Obama. If they hadn't hung Fitzgerald out to dry, he would have run again and won. No Obama for US Senator, no Obama for President.
