The addiction analogy is absurd.

A crack addict will prefer crack over other goods because of his addiction.

A user of products made from crude oil is using those products for a rational reason, namely because they are more economical now than alternatives for certain uses. They have no non-rational addiction-driven reason to reject alternatives.

When people see cars powered by something other than gasoline which are cheaper in overall costs and perform as well or better than gasoline powered cars, they'll buy them.

Ditto for when they see planes powered by something cheaper and better performing than kerosene or when materials other than plastics are cheaper more efficient substitutes for plastic.
