The ethnicities are different between Iraq and Iran. Iranians are mostly Persian and Iraqis are mostly Arab. There is plenty of ethnic bigotry; however, the differences between Shi'ite and Sunni, although slight by our standards, are intolerably vast in thier minds. Saddam was a Bath Socialist, which made him unusually willing to embrace secularism and more tolerant than most leaders in the region wrt the religious differences between Sunni and Shi'ite. I note that tolerance did not make him any less of a monster by my way of thinking.

From their point of view, it wasn't slaughtering their own, but genocide of the greatest enemies of God. Well at least that is what the fighters were fighting for, the leaders were fighting for the usual stuff, real estate, power, influence, vengeance etc.
