Yesterday a 71 year old Aspen native tried to "rob" 6 Aspen banks on the busiest day of the year for Aspen merchants. We listened to the online scanner to the developments and despite Aspen cancelling their fireworks show I had people up for New Years fireworks of our own.

I built a pile of brush trimmings into a ten foot high by fifteen foot wide pile. Yesterday morning I took the skid steer and cleaned an area around the pile thirty feet back and we lit our own pile of trimmings and a pile of fireworks off to celebrate the exit of 2008 and the "reign" of King George and court jester Hanknben.

The mortars made wonderful popping sounds and sparks trailed off for two hundred feet as we danced around a twenty foot flaming giant of inappropriate carbon emissions.

In my book the fire was repayment to me for the carbon lifestyle I chose to live most of my life. I have lived producing much less carbon than most people I know. Last night I took some back and let off with a magnificent display of American excess.

And a few miles away a 71 year old man took his own life at the end of a dead end road. Independence pass is closed for the winter and he pulled up to the closed gate, parked and ate a bullet.

I saw this economic upheaval coming. I thought oil would be the enggame. After witnessing oils plummet my son called me and reminded me "It is the economy stupid". I think that in 2009 we will see the resurgence of pricing on oil. Not from rising demand but from diminishing supply and geopolitical problems. Silver will hopefully rise as you can wisely guess why I would wish that. The rest of the economy will continue to suffer. I chose another way.

I ended my debt. I learned to live frugally. I prepare and store. And with doing that have found a happiness and satisfaction I never had before with trophy home living. What I do not have. I can build.

Life is much more than we believe it is. It is supposed to be lived and shared for the happiness. I took too long to discover that. I try to remind myself everyday of how far I have come in these years since figuring out that happiness was my key.

My guests and I discussed our economy over dinner before the fireworks. One of my guests produces silver jewelry and sells it in Japan. His factory is in America and he exports to Japanese youth that love American youth culture.

He cannot make enough. He produces over 2000 ounces of the strangest looking skulls with chains each month. Fine jewelry charged at fine jewelry pricing. Not my taste in silver but his returns on investment cannot be argued against.

He keeps his business small and efficient. He hires artisans in the Appalachian mountains to produce and has storefronts in Japan. He and his family came here to ski for a week. He footed the bill for ten additional people.

By now you are thinking that a Japanese family was visiting. My guests were all American born. Not every businessman now are from China or Japan.

Some parts of our economy continue to prosper. It really depends on the genius of those building those businesses.

No matter what happens in 2009 we will go on. No matter what. Genius and action will propel many of us forward. Despair and desperation will lead us down a dead end road like the desperate man in Aspen last night.

The next year should be a time to reinvent ourselves, our families and our economy. With help from all of you here I have learned much in this last year. With your help I look forward to learning much more in the coming year.

I choose to be among those using genius, guile and action to make 2009 a better year. I hope everyone I know goes along for the ride.
