since you asked here are my theories:

Its a numbers game i believe you need something like 4 to 6 times the number of players to field a football team as compared to a basketball. That means finding 50 qualified candidates as opposed to 12. On top of that, if you have 2 great players and 3 ok players in basketball you can compete for the national title-see Larry Bird and his school. Having 2 great players and 3 ok players in football gets you very little. Most football programs lose money most bball programs make money. It would make sense to me that on average bball and baseball players are way smarter than football players because in baseball for sure and i think in basketball procontracts are guaranteed but in football you have to pass a physical each year to get your contracted salary so all things being equal I would rather be a baseball or bball player than a football player, not to mention quality of life in later years. Anecdotally several years ago I saw Terry Bradshaw at a book signing and he limped badly and slowly looking at least 20 years older than his true age.

I watched the BCS bowl game last night. Not bad but USC was the best team I saw this year. I thought OK lost because the receivers didnt protect the ball and there was poor play calling near the goal line. Its hard to get 2 yards rushing on the goal line when the other team is way faster than you are.
