If we became oil independent, every Western country would want to do it. No.. you're missing the big picture. We have the EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE to convert each and every gasoline powered vehicle to natural gas RIGHT NOW!! We can permit people to refuel their vehicles AT HOME, hooking into their household NG supply (most have, or can obtain, such a connection). And it's cost will be VERY COMPARABLE to that of current gasoline vehicles. I don't need all of your R&D, solar and wind if I just permit our petroleum companies to drill for NG on public lands!!!! There's the scenario for energy independence!!our country's dramatic reduction of oil demand would be enough to collapse the price of oil and dry up the wealth in the Middle East. HELLO!!!! The price collapses and we're STUCK with vehicles that cost FAR MORE to build and operate (lithium battery prices) than those folks who stuck with fossil fueled vehicles. THEY REAP THE ECONOMIC ADVANTAGE AND WE DON'T!! In fact, we become LESS COMPETITIVE. But I'm WILLING to look at PHEV and electric vehicles in order to bring their production costs and reliability in line with fossil fueled vehicles. Like I said, I like the PHEV concept, but the batteries are still expensive and degrade in performance over time (each and every year, whether charged or not). Give us ultracapacitors that are reliable, mass-producible, and cost friendly to the consumer and then we have a potential paradigm shift in motion as I understand those materials are far more widely available. Until then, quit spewing your untruths in asserting that alternative non-fossil fuels are the only path to energy independence. And got out of the way of achieving a WHOLISTIC energy independence approach that is not biased against fossil fuels produced domestically. Hawk
