His younger brother sent me the note. It said my friend, Dick, had been battling melanoma for a year. What I've since read about the disease is that it's incurable, but treatable. Not sure what that means.

As far as I knew, Dick was a healthy guy. He qualified to leave the Marine Corps after about one year to enter the Naval Academy. He took a Navy commission and served in the Pacific for over 11 years. I would regularly see him at our reunions until a few years ago when he moved to Houston to be near 2 of his daughters.

There will be a memorial service here in another couple weeks. His two younger brothers and his 98 year old mother still live here.
