It takes a long barrel of liquids converting to gases to really launch projectiles. That's why long range guns have long barrels and sawn off shotguns are good only for close action.

The liquids convertible to gases float to the top of magma chambers so there can't be a 200km long column of hot liquid ready to launch. Admittedly I haven't studied the caldera's structure, but it's certainly potentially a booming situation leading to busting.
