My last home was almost 3000SQFT and I heated it with a large catalytic stove. My present home is half that size and I use the same type of stove only a mid sized unit. It sits in the fireplace and I ran a flexible stainless liner up the chimney and then closed off the surrounding opening with Hardy panel and aluminum sheeting.

This year I expect to pay less than $700 to heat for the entire season and I buy the cord wood at over $200 per cord.

The cape cod home temps run from about 72 to 65 degrees in all rooms and periodically we run a small electric heater in the bedroom when the temps are under 0 degrees.

I've used wood for 15 years now and think I"ll continue as I simple like the effect. When I get too stiff to carry the wood.....I'll use electric.
