How about sending every person over 18 in the United States a check for 411,000.00? That's the conforming mortgage amount. Your average couple would be able to easily pay off their mortgage. All other adults would be able to buy a modest home for cash. Or, if paired up together, quite a substantial home.

Of course, I don't advocate this. The number of intended consequences would be myriad.

Here's one: it would not change one bit the plans of those who are deeply underwater on their real estate who intend to walk. You walk from the home, and you've got a check for 411k to get you down the road a, to the next place in life.

After you print the dollars how do you get it to the underwater home borrowers? Is their boss going to give them a raise? Please tell us how thhis can be accoplished.
