Wow, the study leader said they did the work with no purpose in mind. Not likely something that would be funded these days in the US, and in fact wasn't. Now there will be talk of an attosecond gap between the US and "them", and that we need to get there before the Chinese do. At least that's the approach I would suggest to US researchers.
