It's not a chart of living standards and nobody intended it to be that.

It is a chart that shows what a dollar bill would buy at different times. For example, a hundred years ago a dollar bill, in some parts of the Unires States, would buy eight hours of vigorous house-cleaning by an able-bodied young woman. Today, it would buy less than ten minutes of a similar service. That's a loss of 98% in purchasing power.

Incidentally, there certainly are places in the world now where dollars are not as welcome as other currencies, sometimes not accepted at all. But an ignorant, lazy, cranky, person sitting in front of a computer is not likely to have found this out.
