I recently bought Niall Ferguson's "The Ascent of Money." A lot of it was written rather hastily (he has had a career as a journalist as well as an historian), and in some respects it's a sketchy compendium of things he happens to know about rather than a thorough survey. His conviction of the unpredictability of political and economic events is certainly worth absorbing, however, as are his insights into the capacity that we all have for deceiving ourselves. (The worst conman I have ever been a victim of is certainly myself.)
