"I am not sure israel is going to attack gaza on the ground."

What are their options? Sure, they can keep up the air war indefinitely. But, that won't stop the rocket attacks. Far from it. It is like the saturation bombing during WWII that the allies engaged in. One of the stated goals was to reduce German support for the war. It actually had the opposite effect, it turned what was fairly lukewarm support to more enthusiastic support.

At this point in time, if the Zionists don't go in on the ground, they'll look like cowards and Hamas will "win". Especially after Lebanon.

I didnt pay much attention but in retrospect how did israel wait so long before responding in force to thousands of rockets?

It didn't. You need to pay attention. Israel has been killing Gazans for the past two years while closing off the border.
