in the story, the guy gambler was verbally jousting with a older woman most of the tournament. this would be considered pretty low class. as a result of this, she developed a high disgust for this individual. thus when the guy had a chance to win a large amount of money, she made sure he didn't .. thus disrespecting a lady cost him a large amount of dough
