Back when I lived in California briefly in the late '70s, a guy I knew who worked at Japan Airlines fished for abalone (gathered it?). They're hard to get. You have to sneak up on them and slip a pry bar under the shell before they clamp down, then pry them off whatever it is they're attached to. Also understand you have to pound the hell out of them to tenderize before cooking.

It is delicious. I can remember when it was on the menus of the higher priced restaurants, also remember when the moratorium went into effect.
