What you are missing is the fact that many derivatives are themselves part of a pyramid supporting multiple obligations. This is of course devilishly difficult to quantify. The multiple layering - domino effect, Ponzi, call it whatever you will - is extremely dangerous.

You obviously are skeptical or perhaps simply bloody minded in the face of accurate information. Should you wish to learn a lot more about derivatives, get your hands on anything written by Satyajit Das.
