Russian Professor Predicts U.S. Collapse in 2010 Last Edited: Tuesday, 30 Dec 2008, 1:03 PM EST Created: Tuesday, 30 Dec 2008, 1:03 PM EST A photo of a map of the US by Flickr user Hometown Invasion Tour. By FRANK CARNEVALE MyFox National Russia academic and former KGB analyst Igor Panarin predicts that the United States will break into smaller regional states that will come under the influence of foreign countries. And it will happen in 2010. If he's right, you might need a new passport. The Wall Street Journal writes that Panarin theories have recently become very popular in Russia. He introduced his theory in 1998 believing that economic and demographic trends will lead to social crisis and civil war in America. The scenario that he lays out (see map at WSJ.com) splits the continental United States into four sections and sends Alaska and Hawaii into the hands of others. * The Californian Republic will be based in California and will be part of China or under Chinese influence. * The Texas Republic will be based with Texas and will go to Mexico or fall under Mexican influence. * Atlantic America will be based in the Northeast and may join the European Union. * The Central North American Republic will come under Canadian rule. * Hawaii will be a part of Japan or China; and Alaska will be subsumed into Russia. Although this sounds outrageous, Panarin does link his thinking to others who predicted the collapse of the Soviet Union. The thought that the United States will fall along these lines has led columnists, bloggers, and commenters to rally against this theory. Justin Fox of Time suggests that Panarin "knows nothing at all about American regional differences." Owen Thomas of Gawker.com writes that Russians are excited about this prediction because they "would rather think about Russia's Cold War foe dissolving than contemplate what's happening to their own country." The story and the map have garnered many comments online. Most are questioning the inclusion of certain states under certain regions: "As a citizen of Atlantic America, I must ask: Who invited Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia and the Carolinas?" (Gawker.com). "Alabama part of Mexico?" (WSJ.com). "Kentucky part of the EEU? Ohio part of Canada? Texas falling under Mexican influence? Anybody can draw lines on a map." (WSJ.com). The were a few comments alluding to 'Red Dawn' scenarios taking place. Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell and Lea Thompson would never let the U.S.A. come under foreign rule without a fight. myfoxnepa.com
