Leading Illinois Democrats are moving toward holding a special election to fill President-elect Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat, to wrest the decision away from Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich — accused Tuesday in a blistering criminal complaint of trying to peddle Obama’s seat to the highest bidder.

A special election would ensure the seat remains vacant for months. Democrats also worry it could give Republicans a clear shot to pick up a vacancy they had been certain of retaining.

Senate Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) called on the Illinois General Assembly to pass a law for a special election, and Durbin’s call was embraced by the state legislative leadership. “No appointment by this governor could produce a credible replacement,” Durbin told reporters Tuesday.

Outgoing state Senate President Emil Jones, rumored to be a possible Obama successor himself, and Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan both said they’d convene a special session to pass a special election bill — with Madigan saying the House would meet Monday.
