Hawk,

it is well know in Silicon Valley, that the brain drain is working against the US now. Most smart people are still getting educated right here in the US, but then we ship them back to where they came from by not letting them stay on an H-1 visa, or they go back to their own countries because there is more opportunity there.

I'm glad you agree that we need to push for more education in science and tech. That's a start. However, I work with these Phds all the time and they live and breath on grant money from the government and from companies for their R&D. Our government needs to ratchet up research spending on science and tech. As a percentage of our GDP, it's so paltry for being something that is literally the air that our economy breathes.

Hawk,

I have first hand knowledge on the supply of engineering talent in the US. Before the recession hit - last spring we simply could not get engineering talent. Work we could not do domestically we sought help to complete with off shore resources. Getting on site help from a foreign country is hugely difficult - even if the people are within your own company. The problem is that come a recession - engineering talent is as subject to layoff as any other segment of the economy.

We need to allow immigration of engineering/science professions or the work will be done offshore.
