When you guys say that we should let the market decide whether alternatives are competitive, I am bound to point out to you that we heavily subsidize oil, so if we are going to let the market decide, then we have to stop subsidizing oil to make it a level playing field.

Then when we talk about oil versus alternatives in the context of energy independence, I think it makes sense to diversify our energy supply to the point where we are energy independent. There is no conflict in those two views. They are mutually compatible.

Let the market decide with no subsidies and we'll achieve both of those statements, because in short order, we'll find that oil costs a heck of a lot more than alternatives, once the subsidies are removed.
