01/05/09 3:13 PM EST -- ST. PETERSBURG -- Pat Burrell appears to be close to becoming the power bat the Rays have been looking to land.

Sources confirmed to MLB.com that the Rays are close to signing the free-agent slugger to a two-year deal, reportedly worth $16 million.

If signed, Burrell, 32, would be the team's designated hitter, giving the Rays a much-needed power boost from the right side.

Throughout the offseason the Rays have talked to a number of free agents, including Milton Bradley, Jason Giambi, Adam Dunn, Bobby Abreu and Ken Griffey Jr.

Burrell has spent all nine of his Major League seasons with the Phillies. He has a .257 lifetime average with 251 home runs and 827 RBIs. Last season, he hit .250 with 33 homers and 86 RBIs for the World Series champions.
