You may be right...Yet, the Rays have one of the best scouting organizations in MLB today -- that's one of their competitive advantages...The Rays will never spend close to what the Yankees or the Red Sox spend on talent so they must be careful when they invest in experienced (and expensive) baseball players...I'm sure Joe Maddon and the Rays' very smart GM got lots of input from the Rays' scouts...Remember that Burrell also hit well against lefties, with an OPS of .952, a big need for the Rays lineup. Let's judge this new investment at the end of the 2009 season and we'll see if it pays off.
