We *do* have some of the lowest gas taxes on the planet.

Lowest doesn't necessarily imply low.

The average tax paid in the US is almost 50% (almost 50% of the pre-tax retail price for gasoline, maybe its more like 40% but its in that general area).

Would a $12,000 tax on a new car be considered low? A $40 or $50 tax tacked on to a $100 grocery bill?

I'd say we have high gasoline taxes, while Europe has massive gasoline taxes.

Though, they ARE lower in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Russia, Venezuela, etc.

They are effectively negative in at least some of those countries. Gasoline is subsidized.
