In the last paragraph, you say that we need to stiffen the spine of the moderates. So which is it? I think you got it right in the last paragraph. You need to acknowledge that we weren't at war with Islam until the 80's when Bin Laden declared war on us and we basically ignored the thread. Prior to that, terrorism existed (in Ireland as well), but the world lived with it, because it was the exception, not the norm. Now, terrorism has been raised to new levels and we need to take a new approach to it. Everyone is agreed on that. However, we need to experiment and see what works. Going to war in Iraq did not work. It only depleted our Treasury. The terrorists are alive and well. One thing that will also not work is declaring war on Islam in general. There are 1 billion or more Muslims. Not all of them are bad. Their religion is very intolerant compared to ours, but having conversed with the radical evangelicals in this country, I'd say we have our own extremists to deal with as well. We'd better figure out ways of dealing with people very different from us other than fighting wars with them. That will lead us to perpetual warfare as is the case in Israel. Based on your posts, I can see that you think Israel's approach is one that works. I have a great deal of sympathy for Israel and take their side on most issues. However, they are in perpetual war with the surrounding Muslims. Their approach isn't working. We shouldn't emulate them, unless we want to be prepared to spend all of our money on war with 1 billion people.
