Our government spending as a share of GDP is the same as the US currently and far below European countries such as Britain. Our taxes are above the US share of GDP because we've been running surpluses for years. This year though there will be a deficit. We have a sovereign wealth fund called the Future Fund where the excess surpluses were banked once the national debt was paid down (in fact there is government debt outstanding so as to keep that market open if needed).
