I once shared a semiprivate hospital room with a Pakistani Harvard MBA student. He asked me what I was studying. I said, English literature. He drew himself up self-importantly in bed and announced, "I find it VERY strange that an American should study English Literature!" I asked why. He said, "One should not study English Literature unless one can read it with an Oxford accent!" I replied that Shakespeare did not have an Oxford accent. He glared in fury and was thinking of something else to say. At that point a nurse came in and stuck thermometers in both our mouths. After that we did not speak.
