Oil and terrorism are two sides of the same coin. Until you realize that, you are not seeing the bigger picture.

Oh, I would agree, to an extent... But it's like a plane and a suicidal pilot. Is the plane responsible for the pilot intentionally seeking to take human life by crashing it into a building full of people?

Oil, for the Mid-East, can be used for good, or bad.. It can be used in the interest of progress and modernization, or for reactionary hatred and violence.

And if you think that spending 1/2 Trillion dollars is too high a price now, just imagine how much would have been spent to confront groups like Al-Qaida had they managed to overthrow the existing regimes (despotic and corrupt as they might be) and seizing control of that oil revenue to finance their global Jihad. This was one of the PRIMARY AGENDAS of Ayman Zawahiri, #2 of Al Qaida (and former leader of Egyptian Islamic Jihad). He desperately desired to seize control over Saudi oil supplies and jack the price up to $100/bbl permanently to finance their activities and restoration of their Caliphate.

Bottom line, oil is just the means of making money. It could be gold, diamonds, or even Lithium; any commodity that they can readily sell to gain the hard capital they require.

Furthermore, oil is not going away anytime soon. Even if the US manages to become energy independent, other countries will not be able to for years to come. And energy self-reliance only makes us an even bigger target for the Islamists because it will make us stronger.

In sum, our independence from imported oil will not dissuade the Islamists from attacking us. We represent the guardian power protecting the western non-muslim economies and simply have to be removed from the equation for them to advance their global jihad.
