Russia has cut off all Europe's gas supplies, says Ukraine
Ukraine's gas company claims that Russia has cut off all gas supplies though the country, a move which would worsen a crisis which threatens to leave a number of European countries without heating in the midst of a winter chill.

"Russia stopped all transit through Ukraine" at 7:44 am (0544 GMT), said Naftogaz spokesman Valentin Zemlyansky.

"Russia has left Europe without gas," he added.

All supplies to Romania had already been cut, while Slovakia has declared a state of emergency and Bulgaria says it will run out of gas within days.

Some 17 European countries yesterday reported sharp falls or a complete halt in Russian gas shipments.

The European Union branded the situation "completely unacceptable" and demanded the flow be restored.

"It is indeed a crisis, a serious one," Ferran Tarradellas told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. Alternative routes from Russia avoiding Ukraine will not be able to replace the shortfall, he noted. "We are demanding that they restore gas supplies to the EU immediately."

The disruption coincides with a particularly cold snap – temperatures dropped to minus 15F (minus 25C) in Serbia – and many countries in eastern and central Europe depend on gas for central heating.

Gas officials in Moscow and Kiev signalled they were ready for further talks to resolve the problems. But both sides continued to blame the other for the disruption.

One after another, European countries announced cuts in their supplies of Russian gas, with Balkan countries the hardest hit but EU heavyweights France, Germany and Italy also suffering reductions.

Russia is the world's largest natural gas producer and provides around one-quarter of the gas used in the European Union, or about 40 per cent of the gas the bloc imports.

The country cut gas supplies to Ukraine on January 1 over a payment dispute. It then accused Ukraine of "stealing" Russian gas meant for customers in Europe.

On Monday, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin ordered an immediate reduction of gas shipped to Europe via Ukraine to compensate for volumes Gazprom said had been illegally siphoned off by Kiev.

Leaders in both Russia and Ukraine had pledged in recent weeks that supplies to Europe would not be disrupted by their dispute.

Bulgaria has resorted to rationing supplies to industry, Slovakia declared an energy emergency and most Balkan countries said deliveries of Russian gas had been totally halted.

Austria, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, France, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey all reported deep cuts in their gas supplies.

the crisis is all Putin generated. Russia pays Ukraine transit fees and the revenue form the transit fees more or less covers for the gas Ukraine uses.

Now Russia wants 30% more for their gas but refuses to pay more for transit fees.

Extraction cost of NG is the same and transit costs are the same - more or less.

If Russia was paying 30% more for transit fees the whole issue would not arise, but because paying more transit fees will lower Russia’s net revenue from gas exports Putin wants only one sided deal - which is actually screwing Ukraine so that Russia will get more money

Putin and his gang are a bunch of mafia type criminals and worse with no place in leading any country – When the EU, China and the US will wake up to this they will realize the severity and danger of having this gang in power in Russia
