That highway can be a challenge during the winter, as you might well guess. Boy, that IS an understatement....We ran into one of those "challenges" one winter when I was about 8 or 9....Things in the car got deathly tense, as Mom turned around to all of us kids in the back seat, and told us NOT TO SAY ONE THING....no matter how scared we might get....The car was slipping, going up that hill from Ouray, no chains....and of course, no guard rails....I truly thought when I looked out the window, that we would all go over and down a few thousand feet... When Dad got the car turned back around going back where we came from, none of us still said a word. We were all just in trauma.
